I received this certificate at the TED conference at AC Flora High School April 19th, 2012. It languished in my wallet for three years. I kept meaning to give it to a deserving candidate as I know several very worthy people who deserves it but "life" tended to get in the way. I would remember for a short time that I needed to pass it on and then forget for a while. However, I finally decided to give this certificate to a very worthy friend. He is someone I work with and his pursuit of excellence has helped me in my working career. "A rising tide lifts all boats..." and this friend certainly has help lift many of us to be better people by his example of friendship, courage, commitment to excellence and steadfast devotion to a high set of moral principals. It is an honor to pass this certificate to him, Chan Shealy.

its not everyday you meet a most excellent school secretary... unless you visit my son's school. when i think about the stereotype of school secretaries...it's the stuff that makes memorable characters in modern day classic films. ( see Edie McClurg in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") but just imagine all the nut job parents one has to deal with in such a position...i'm sure its never ending. but how cool is it to take a request from a 3rd grader to play Alice Cooper's "Schools Out" at the end of dismissal announcements on the last day of school? that's not just cool, that's most excellent!

Michelle and I recently looked through our shoeboxes full of momentos collected through college, and we both said that half of our boxes consisted of cards from you. I've never reciprocated your cards, but I've loved each one. I hope this is one small token of appreciation that speaks loudly for how important you are to me. When I tell people about you, I always mention this story. When I was having a rough go of things in July 2010, having received my last rejection letter indicating that grad school wasn't an option for that Fall, you were one of the first people I told about it. The next morning, I woke to a knock at the door. Somehow, in the less-than-twelve hours between, you had arranged for someone to deliver a box of cookies to me. I sat on my bed and ate a cookie, crying and smiling. I remember thinking: "God, I'm lucky to have such a good friend." I know that's the way that your friends think about you. No one has a bad word to say against you. You are uncommonly kind and loyal to those you care about. When I think about you, I think about those cookies, a walk to Picnic Point, the trips to Chicago, and our baseball games. I think about the way we perceive people so similarly. I appreciate the lucky break that caused us to meet. It was especially lucky because you are someone I would like in my life forever. I don't often find people who deserve that category. Those who know you are lucky to have found you.

This certificate was given away:
I feel, as if there are few times in a person’s life where they have the opportunity to elaborate on how they actually affected them. It is perhaps, time. It is sometimes to short, sometimes too long, sometimes close to none. In order to be able to tell how someone actually reflected you it requires time. Reflection can be a nuisance, a nightmare for more reasons than not, and it’s simply easier to turn the other cheek and keep moving—even if it is positive. Reflection can make someone go crazy, it can romanticize idea then when presented to reality it does not make much coherent sense, it is not organized. We don’t have time to organize it, because when something deeply affects someone it is hard to put it into words. Feelings are completely irrational and in our world we like things orderly and presentable. As a result, we keep moving and moving, and eventually we hit a point where we decide, (what Erikson called ego integrity vs. despair) whether or not life was ‘worth’ it. Did we do everything we wanted to do? Did we say everything we wanted to say? We simply have too much time to reflect, and what if the people—that affected us the most are gone? Well, in short this is my ‘chance’ to tell a teacher who made a significant effect on my academic life. He didn’t make me love English, he didn’t make me love analyzing, he didn’t make me love reading—these are all tools that I already had at my bedside. What I lacked was confidence. Seems trivial, now but ask me at the beginning of January to be an English major (which always floated in the back of my mind since about 9th grade) and I would of come up with some nonsense to why that was not plausible route, I couldn’t even tell you what it would be because, once you stop lying to yourself the truth becomes so dominant, so conniving that to deceive it is almost impossible. This lack of confidence is by failure in the past, because it is easy to be swayed by the world’s rigid standards in the academic, and I certainly was. I felt inferior to everyone around me, and I still, still feel this at times. My academic confidence grows slowly, and I am slowly learning that I am not the same mold as everyone else around me. I think for some reason, I always wanted to be. But I’m simply not, and this is troublesome when you are in high school. The S.A.T forces standards on a realm of several different social constructs and forces everyone to integrate into the same square box. Beside the point, Zeller tapped in to something that no one had ever really suggested out loud before, and I was so astounded when I heard it. I couldn’t get it out of my mind, and now it’s engraved. Zeller is a true teacher--for he does not provide answers. He provides questions and criticism that really, really is constructive. He always leaves these questions completely ambiguous, so you as a student get to take it and roll with it as you please. That is the beauty of English, and hell—everything. Nothing is certain, nothing is finite. Doubt is essential because once you are certain about an idea (specifically academically) your door is closed and everything else seems fallible. I love never being completely right, I love a challenge at every corner, and Zeller helped fuel this. Always willing to answers questions, and with detailed responses! He takes the time, and I feel that not many people do this. And it is sad, that more people don’t but completely understandable. Like I was saying earlier, time is always of the essence and can ultimately be our worst enemy. But Zeller was not selfish with his time, and it shows. He genuinely cares about his students, and if- (I get over my fear of public speaking) I would want to be a teacher like Zeller. Yes, he is still very new. He has a lot to work on, but perhaps as he has helped me, we, as a class have helped him grow. It is like in biology-- with mutual relationships. I hope at least, this is true. I’m sure it is. This card of excellence—is for someone who offered one of the best gifts someone can give—and that is learning more and more that you really never know anything that is true. There is never an end to analysis—as in with literature and as in with education, and as in with general knowledge. Who gave the time, and criticism that every undergrad needs and every person needs at one point in their life. Hopefully, many points but the times where it does strike, where someone does turn a new light that you were perhaps familiar with but did not yet have the lenses to closely look at, and walks you through it with ease and with complete and utter confidence in you---it is your duty, and in this case, my duty to let that person know. Thank you, Zeller.

I never knew there were so many people around me that had the same goals and desires for this world we live, that I do. When I got this award of excellence I knew that I had to pass it on to my friend Emily. Without her I would not have been able to attend this event, and I would not have had the life changing experiences that I did. She made it possible for me.

I attended TEDx Columbia, SC and this certificate was in my black ninja folder. I do not know if I saw the bear-acuda. The Kaiju at Neo-Monster Island, aka my home, probably ate them all. (Shameless webcomic plug: http://www.neomonsterisland.com) This certificate will be given to my husband Sean aka Shin-Goji for his excellence in tackling the clogged sewage drain in our household. He is normally hesitant to tackle such herculean endeavors, but he sucked it up and went at it. If overcoming your fears to do what needs to be done doesn't fit the definition of what excellence entails, I don't know what does.

I sent this certificate to Delaware, where my good friend Andrew lives. He has a great way of reasoning through just about any question, and I am often smarter after having talked with him. He also strives for intellectual rigor, so no bias goes unexamined. When we were both working at Pizza Hut, he would give his coworkers interesting math problems to work on, and I think everyone benefitted from working on these.

I recieved it from a gentleman named Matt at a Columbia Refresh meeting. I wont retell his story, but i held on to this card becuase it is hard to impress me. I held out for awhile, but tonight i've given it to another gentleman named Warren. You see, the parking spaces to where i live tend to fill up quickly, and theres prime real estate accross from my apt. There was this truck taking up all of the spaces, because it had a trailer for carrying stuff hooked to it! I swore everytime i saw that truck, i wanted to complain to managment, but i couldnt justify the trouble to the person or the effort i had to put into it to get those spaces free. Then one day, i see the truck left 2 spaces by moving up ( it was parked horizontally accross several spaces ) i was estatic! I contemplated on leaving the card onthe windshield along with a note, but i wanted to give it in person. I was thinkin of camping out and waiting, but tonight i ran into the truck owner while parking next to his truck! I prompty exited my vehicle and presented Warren with this card of Excellence. So, this ends my story, and hopefully begins his.

The recipient of this certificate drove home one of my very inebriated friends though the recipient did not know him very well at all. He made sure he was safe (after having a tough bump on the head), drove him home, took him up to his apartment to ensure he was in bed safely, and called him the next day to make sure he was ok. This guy was the epitome of a good samaritan.

I was burning an intelligent-looking monkey doll when I saw a banana peel land on the track of a bike race where I was giving out of high-fives and just being all-around awesome. Knowing what happens when anything, especially bike tires, slips on a banana peel, I didn't panic but instead calmly dove Louganis-style onto the track, grabbed the peel and barrelrolled off in one fluid motion, saving the race and saving the day. No one was hurt and I was commended and awarded this card.

May this certificate of excellence be carried on proudly. I received this one certificate after I was a good sport in the crushing defeat of the Netherlands against Spain in the 2010 World Cup Finals. It is strange how friendships begin. They usually begin unexpectedly. I know that I have had a lot of friendships during my lifetime because I can still remember most of them. Some of my friends have become distant due to relocation or other changes in their lives while others remain close. Some are still living while others have passed on. But each of my friends became part of a collage of memories that I will always cherish. I was given this card by a really cool person that I now feel comfortable calling my friend. I was given this card after we hung out for most of the day. We went rock climbing, shooting a pistol, had dinner, went to a coffee shop, and hung out with several of his other friends. I am looking forward to our next adventure.

I received this certificate when I went on a rant while sitting at the bar at the Whig on Friday the 18th, 2010. I was given it by a gentleman who had just enjoyed a rant I went on. The details of how I got started are a little fuzzy: the night was old, the spirits already imbibed. I can pinpoint what I was went on about though. That being the future. Often nowadays I hear people saying that humanity is going to wipe itself out. We're going to run out of resources, kill the Earth, loot and pollute our ways into a Captain Planet episode, or what have you. The future is a dystopia. When I look at the world of tomorrow I see an unimaginable utopia. Maybe I'm too Jules Verne in my thoughts and should be more HG Wells. At any rate my premise was basically this: Imagine the difference between life 100 years ago and now. 50 and now. Think of the 80s and how monstrously different they were from now chiefly due to the ubiquity of data that is the internet in it's current "everywhere controlling everything" form. Now try to apply that foreknowledge of how little time results in so much progress. Look 100 years from now and try to think of what will be. It's easy to extrapolate from now and say faster this smaller that, but you need to actually create something new really. It's akin to asking a cowboy at the turn of the century to predict the internet. Now try to apply this to same approach to 50 years from now. A fair bit easier, with (probably) more current technologies present but more advanced. There will still be wholly new advancements though. Now do it for 20 years. What will be in 2030? The more I think about it, and what life was like between the 80s and the 00s, the less capable I am of giving an answer at all. Humanity may cause problems and may not fix them, be it quickly enough or at all, but we'll certainly continue onward. And look at that, I've rambled on and on here as well. I hope it's at least as coherent as the less-than-sober original speech.
